BIM Here to Stay

Traditionally visualization models, structural analytical models, two-dimensional design and fabrication drawings are generated throughout the design and construction phase of a project. Within this traditional workflow any changes to site conditions, geometry, structural system, or utilities must be independently addressed in each of the models and drawings. Not only does this workflow reduces productivity by requiring duplicated efforts but also allows for potential errors due to miscommunication or inconsistency in shared data among the parties involved. Building information modelling (BIM) delivers an upgrade to the traditional workflow by providing a platform where parties from all disciplines within the project can access and modify the data. BIM workflow uses a single model for analytical purposes, visualization and drawing production, quantity estimates, etc.

By utilizing a single model with accurate and up-to-date information, BIM enhances the quality of design and allows for consistent documentation. The used of an integrated model not only leads to more efficient design and drawing production workflow but it also helps prevents issues during construction and improves collaboration between disciplines.

Having an integrated 3D visualization of the final product, including all features of the structure, it is possible to address potential conflicts and clashes prior to construction, preventing construction delays. During construction, BIM can be used to assist in accurate pre-fabrication, material deliveries, and supports project collaboration across disciplines.

The benefits of BIM extend far beyond the project design and construction phase as it provides a tool for future construction, operation, maintenance, and inspection. BIM provides a complete representation of the physical characteristics of a structure, offering an information platform for its entire lifecycle.
